Your analysis about why cafe working works makes sense. You have a purpose for being there and the environment provides the right social-but-not-interactive buzz to help you feel productive. The biggest thing that keeps me from cafes (besides COVID) is that I am at a point where having a large external monitor is really helpful for working. I usually have multiple docs open at the same time and being able to see them all at the same time speeds my workflow. But for a single document, say designing a learning flow, a cafe can be a good setting.
Thanks Chris for sharing your thoughts! I'm glad you see some sense in my analysis. As you can see it's pretty much based on an observation of just me so I wasn't sure if it's all in my head. And yes, I can't imagine doing work that requires several windows open at a cafe. Another deterrent for me is that at home I have a set-up with a laptop stand and external keyboard to correct my posture, whereas at a cafe I don't. Usually there's not enough space on the table to set everything up, plus it's heavy to carry.
